The idea of a canoe (kayak) slalom competition is for paddlers to negotiate a course of 9 gates’ – pairs of poles hanging over the water – in a set order, without touching the poles.
It is carried out against the clock, and penalties are incurred if poles are touched or gates omitted.
Total score is time + penalties – lowest score wins!
