The Scouts of the World Award (SOWA)

The Scouts of the World Award (SOWA) is a Scout Network award that gives participants, aged 18-25, the chance to undertake a project of their choice within the themes of Peace, Environment and Sustainability.

This award is a great chance to improve many skills, including independence, planning, teamwork, communication and time management, all while gaining an understanding of global issues. Throughout this project, you can help change communities forever, as well as undertaking developing personally.

To complete the award, you’ll need to:

• Attend a Scouts of the World Discovery run by a SOWA trainer. This will give you some possible project ideas, think about sustainable development and whether your project will last once you’ve left.
• Create a plan for your project based on one or more of three themes (Peace, Environment and Sustainable development)
• Complete the SOWA voluntary project, lasting at least 80 hours.
• Complete a presentation, evaluation and personal reflection.

“Doing my Scouts of the World Award project taught me so many things. Before my SOWA, I struggled with my leadership skills, and I would never feel confident speaking in front of large groups of people. During and after the project, my leadership skills improved drastically, and I was able to learn so much about communicating with people at all levels.

It is so important for us to do projects like this in Scouting. Part of Scouting is being a global citizen. This means learning about how global issues can affect local, national and international communities and how we can make a difference in our World. Doing this project gave me a better understanding of what issues affect us and how doing small things to improve lives as a community can make a big difference. I would definitely recommend completing the Scouts of the Worlds Award!”

FAQs and misconceptions

• The award doesn’t have to be completed in another country. Whilst it can be, it could also be completed in your local community. It doesn’t have to cost any money.
• The planning and project can be completed as part of a team
• You will have guidance from a mentor throughout your project. The Area International team are also available to help you through your project.
• The award doesn’t have to be completed at once. You can start any time after your 18th birthday and finish any time before your 25th birthday. Your 80 hours don’t have to be completed at once, and can be spread out over a time that works for you.
